Listening to Form: Artist's Talk at The Crucible in Oakland, CA

The Crucible is an important part of my artistic process; so I’m thrilled to be offering a joint Artist’s Talk there with a sculptor who has truly inspired me in recent years, Alexis Pavlantos. We’ll each present our work and discuss the basic fascinations that have lead us to sculpture. Though our work is very different on the surface, we found while preparing for this event that our work comes from similar places internally. There will be time for Q&A afterwards. The event is free for members of The Crucible, and tickets are $5.00 for nonmembers. To learn more or purchase tickets, please Click Here.

In the sculpture department…

On Tuesday Evenings, I’ll be offering a new class: The Portrait in Bas-Relief. Students will work from life in oil based clay on a prepared wooden backdrop. UPDATE: This class if full as of 10/3

On Saturday afternoons, I’ll be offering Figure Modeling/Long Pose, one of the core classes in our curriculum at JHess Studios. Students work from life in oil-based clay on a 28” flexible armature. The focus is on developing understanding of gesture, proportion, and form, as well as improving clay modeling skills.

Face Off and Casting Demo at the PSoA Conference

In 2016, I joined the annual Face-Off demonstration at the Portrait Society of America's Annual conference, The Art of the Portrait. The Face-Off is an exciting event that kicks off the festivities every year at the conference. Artists work with portrait models in groups of 3-4, all in one large space where spectators can browse and watch the process up close and live.

This year I'm thrilled to be participating again. The following day, I'll cast my piece as an all-day demonstration in the vendor area of the conference. The events will take place in Atlanta, Georgia for 2017. The demo is open to all who attend the conference at no extra charge. If you're planning to attend, please stop by and say hello.
